Senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal on Wednesday recommended the name of Baramati MP Supriya Sule as the successor of her father Sharad Pawar and the party’s national president. The former deputy chief minister of Maharashtra also said the state’s responsibility should be given to the Leader of Opposition Ajit Pawar, who is the nephew of Sharad Pawar.

This is the first time that an NCP leader has publicly endorsed the name of Sule and Ajit for leadership roles. The development comes a day after Sharad Pawar announced his resignation from the party post and appointed a committee to choose his successor. Despite repeated requests and demands from leaders and workers to withdraw his decision, Pawar has refused to budge so far.

Speaking to reporters at Bandra Wednesday morning, Bhujbal said, “We want Sharad Pawar to withdraw his resignation. But if he is firm on it, then I think Supriya Sule should be given the national responsibility while Ajit Pawar should be given the responsibility of the state.”

Amid reports that the senior NCP leaders held a meeting to finalise Pawar’s successor, senior party leader Praful Patel said that no such meeting was scheduled on Wednesday.

“I am the convener of the committee and when it will be held, I will inform you in advance. I request you all to not have any speculations,” he said, amid reports that Baramati Lok Sabha MP Supriya Sule would be given national responsibility by the committee.

When asked about Bhujbal’s opinion, Patel said that it was his personal opinion and everybody is entitled to have his own view. Apart from Sule, Patel’s name was also discussed as the next party president, to which he replied saying he is not in the fray to claim the post. “He (Sharad Pawar) has given us time of two to three days till when he will think over his decision. Let him do that. As of now he has shown no intention of withdrawing his resignation,” said Patel.
