Just as nephrologists were beginning to believe that the organ transplant programme was gaining momentum-considering a splendid performance in the first month of the year by the citys private hospitals-organ transplants are seeing a sudden slump.
In the month of January, the city saw 11 organ transplants of which six were cadaver transplants. However, the following month there was only one transplant and in the month of March there were no transplants.
After 1997 where nine transplants were done in a span of three months (three at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, three at KEM and two at Nair Hospital),this is the best year. We saw a ray of hope and just when we thought things are falling in place there is a slump. However we are hopeful that the trend will pick up, said Dr Vatsala Trivedi, zonal transplant coordination center adding,Society is always for donations. Skin donation and even eye donations are widely accepted by relatives, however, organs like kidney, liver and even heart can be retrieved from a brain dead patient. There is considerable awareness among the masses and some are even willing to donate. It is the hospital administration that needs to take it further. The hospital has to identify brain dead patients and convince relatives to donate.
Meanwhile,at Hinduja Hospital,15 donor families were felicitated to mark Maharashtra Organ Donation Day on Saturday. Seven hospitals were felicitated as well. Medical social workers and doctors from Jaslok Hospital,Bombay Hospital,Hinduja Hospital,Lilavati Hospital,Wockhardt Hospital and Hiranandani Hospital were felicitated on the occasion. Bhushan Gagrani,Secretary (medical education and drugs),Pravin Shinghare,Deputy Director of medical education and research and Mohan Jadhav, the states appropriate authority for transplants were present on the occasion.
