After a dry spell, the city witnessed thundershowers on Friday, with the weather department recording 8 mm rainfall in Colaba and 2.7 mm rainfall in Santacruz. “The thundershowers are a result of sheer convection. The temperatures were at least three degrees above normal the last two days and there is already moisture in the atmosphere.
October is the month for withdrawal of monsoon and during this month thundershowers are expected post evening and in the night,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director-general (western region), India Meteorological Department (IMD).
These thundershowers will be short-lived and will last anywhere between ten minutes and four hours, he added.
However, the temperature is expected to remain high with hot and humid mornings. The IMD has also forecast that the thundershowers are likely occur throughout the week.
Meanwhile, the Southwest monsoon has begun withdrawing and has now reached Gujarat. “It has been there for a good number of days now,” added Hosalikar.
