Anthony Paul, 35, arrested for allegedly planting drugs on actor Chrisann Pereira, used to argue with residents of his apartment building over parking issues, his neighbours at the Woodland Complex, located near Mira Road railway station in Mumbai says.
Narayan Nambiar, the building secretary, told The Indian Express, “Over issues like parking and other building related matters, Paul got into arguments during meetings. Hence we told him that we will not entertain you since you are not a member as the house is not in your name. Later he got his parents to include his name in the house following which he attended the meeting. However, later again the parents took over.”
Paul and his family occupy two flats on the second floor of the Woodland Complex building.
Another building resident said, “There was never any complaint against him. He was however sensitive about parking space for their two cars due to which, at times, there were arguments.”
Paul’s father Alex and younger brother refused to comment on the issue and the allegations against Paul when The Indian Express spoke to them.
Besides actor Pereira, Paul had reportedly tried to frame four other persons in a similar manner since January, according to Mumbai Police Crime Branch sources.
In all the cases, Paul reportedly sought to extract revenge for various reasons – a break-up, jealousy, work-related issues, and fight over Covid restrictions.
An officer who was interrogating Paul said that during the process he has been calm.
Paul, whose family comprises his parents and younger brother, was born in Bandra and studied at St Andrews College there up till Class XII. Later he went to Australia to study hospitality management and eventually returned to India nearly seven years later.
Crime branch (unit X) Senior Inspector Dipak Sawant said that after returning from Australia, Paul then tried fishing business with the co-accused Rajesh Borate which did not work.
Eventually, in April 2022, he started a bakery called “Our Daily Bread” at IC Colony in Borivali after which he opened another bakery at Malad with the same name.
Soon after he named the bakery “Our Daily Bread”, the owners of a well-known Mira Road Bakery of the same name approached him and alleged that he was using the goodwill of the Mira Road-based bakery.
After Paul’s involvement in the alleged crime came to light, there were calls to “boycott” the ‘Our Daily Bread’ based in IC colony which over the past year had become quite popular .
Such was the panic, that the Mira Road-based bakery’s owner Stephen Martis circulated a message on WhatsApp groups clarifying that Paul was not associated with his bakery.
The message read, “Anthony Paul without our consent has taken on the name ‘Our Daily bread’ at IC Colony Borivali and Malad. The process with regards to getting a patent for the title ‘Our Daily Bread’ is in process… We have no connection whatsoever in the past or at present or any business ties with Anthony Paul or with his family.”
