A musical shower by Carnatic maestro

For parched musical souls there is Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna’s mellifluous invocation of love and rain. For them the wait for Carnatic music maestro’s performance this evening at Nehru Centre,Worli, has been longer—two years—than the city’s wait for a cool shower.

For the globetrotting vocalist, this gap wasn’t intentional. “I’ve been touring. I perform whenever I’m invited and paid for it,” says the 79-year-old.

However, the “great audience of Mumbai” has always been a draw for him. When in Mumbai for the Prem Varsha concert, the Padmavibhusan wants to spring some surprises on the audience. Balamuralikrishna promises “impromptu recitals” based on rain and love. The evening would feature his raga-based compositions. Though widely known as the master of Carnatic classical music,he is also a renowned poet. By the age of 16 he had composed kritis in all 72 Melakartha ragas. “While composing,I give as much importance to poetry as to music,” says the expert violin, veena, mridangam and kanjira player.

Though many have doubted the survival of classical music in India, the legendary vocalist has been optimistic. “Anything that’s called ‘classic’ lives forever. In fact, they get better with age,” he says before pointing out the growing awareness on classical art brought in mainly by internet. “It has become easy to get popularity, but the artists have to work on maintaining it.”

His music might have touched people across the world, but the exponent’s recreation lies in enjoying action sequences and a few games at casinos. “I love it when a lean man topples a heavyweight opponent,” he says.
