BMC suspended eight octroi officials on May 16 for alleged complicity in tax evasion. Law committee chairman Makarand Narvekar had brought up the issue earlier this month.
Narvekar raided the Vashi and Mumbai Central octroi posts on May 1 and caught eight vehicles carrying construction material attempting to evade tax at Vashi. Mayor Sunil Prabhu said,The officers were suspended last week pending an internal inquiry.
Four clerks and four octroi inspectors have been suspended following a complaint by Narvekar,who submitted documents and videos of the alleged tax evasion attempt, said a senior civic official in the assessment and collection department. After the raid,Narvekar claimed to have received death threats from octroi agents.
The issue was raised at a standing committee meeting and members directed the civic administration to take stern action against the octroi officials if found guilty in the internal probe.
