Six men who were booked for cheating in the written tests during Mumbai Police recruitment drive in June, were arrested on Sunday after they appeared for a recruitment test of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) in Pune and Solapur.
According to police, five candidates were arrested by Dahisar police from Pune while one aspirant was arrested by Goregaon police from Solapur. “The physical tests of SRPF candidates were held last month and qualified aspirants were to appear for written tests on Sunday. After scrutinising the list of 27,000 candidates who were to appear for the written test, we found that 42 of them were earlier suspected to have been involved in cheating in the recruitment test held by the Mumbai Police. We subsequently kept a watch on them,” a senior police officer said.
Police teams were sent to various exam centres and they found the six suspects turning up in Pune and Solapur centres.
In June, the Mumbai Police had initiated an investigation into a racket related to their recruitment drive, where several police aspirants and other scamsters were arrested for cheating and facilitating cheating during the written tests using several China-made products such as simplex phones, electric earbuds and button cameras.
Police identified that of the 118 persons involved in the racket, 91 were candidates and 27 were scamsters. The police traced 29 of them while the others went absconding. “Of the 91 candidates identified, 42 appeared for the physical tests of the SRPF and managed to clear it. We decided to track them at the examination centre and arrested six of them who arrived to write the exam,” the officer said.
Officials said that nothing illegal was recovered from the six to indicate that they were cheating during the SRPF exams as well.
Senior police inspector Pravin Patil of Dahisar police station said, “We did not recover any devices from the five accused who were arrested from Pune, so we cannot say that they were going to cheat again.”
Held for cheating
The Pune Police arrested a 25-year-old man for cheating during the SRPF written test a week after he came out of jail on getting bail in a similar offence in the Mumbai Police recruitment test.
According to police, the accused Yogesh Jadhav was arrested by Bhandup police in June for allegedly cheating during the written test of the Mumbai Police’s recruitment drive and secured bail eight days ago. He was arrested again on Sunday while cheating at the SRPF examination in Pune.
Senior inspector Abhay Mahajan of Sinhagad Road police station in Pune said, “Jadhav was arrested by Bhandup police in June. He had stepped out on bail just eight days ago but was caught again for cheating.”
The Sinhagad police who arrested three others for cheating during SRPF written test said that they recovered simplex phones and electric earbuds from him.
