The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai, arrested two drug traffickers at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Sunday for allegedly trafficking 42.34 kilograms of hydroponic weed, cannabis grown using a method of plant cultivation without soil, worth approximately Rs 42 crore in the illicit market.
The agency claimed that the arrested accused were passengers coming from Bangkok. According to a DRI official, specific intelligence was received about the particular consignment through reliable sources Sunday, and officials laid a trap inside the airport premises. Once the descriptions were matched with both passengers, they were intercepted inside the airport.
During a search of their baggage, officials found 21 food packets containing noodles, biscuits, and several other items. The contraband was stuffed in the food packets, and after testing with a field kit, the report came positive, and it was confirmed that the recovered contraband was Hydroponic weed, said the DRI Official.
A case was registered under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, against both the accused and the contraband was seized as per the legal procedures of the Act.
The agency has been conducting further investigation to get more leads to uncover the broader network of drug trafficking. The accused’s profile, call data records and previous history of travel abroad are being scrutinised to find out more leads in the case, added the DRI Official.
The agency also said this was the second significant seizure of hydroponic weed recently. Earlier, it seized 4.7 kilograms of cocaine worth Rs 47 crore on October 31 and arrested five people, including the carriers, financers, handlers and distributors. The worth of seized contraband in the last three days has exceeded Rs 90 crore in the Mumbai DRI zone.
