A 20-year-old man died and two others were hospitalised after inhaling toxic fumes after a chemical leak in the MIDC area of Andheri on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased, identified as Ahmed Hussain, 20, had been working inside a jewellery workshop where he handled waste material.
Police said Hussain was cleaning the waste by mixing it in water with sodium sulphate when the incident occurred around 4.55 pm inside a two-storeyed structure at Bhangarwadi.
According to officials, Hussain accidentally added an excess amount of sodium sulphate, causing fumes to be released. Hussain collapsed after inhaling the gas.
Hearing him scream, his sister Saba Shaikh, 17, and neighbour Naushad Ansari, 28, rushed inside and also inhaled the fumes.
Hussain’s father, who was outside the room at the time, alerted police after finding all three lying unconscious. They were taken to Holy Spirit Hospital with police assistance. Hussain was declared dead on arrival, while Saba and Ansari remain admitted and are currently recovering.
“We have registered the incident and an inquiry is underway,” said Senior Inspector Ravindra Wani of MIDC police station.
