The Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Monday claimed to have cracked the case of an unidentified body found in Ratnagiri two years ago. They have arrested the dead person’s brother and five others in the case.

The accused have been identified as Kirit Wakhariya (50),Ketan Bhuptani (40),Suryakant Ghadi (49),Maruti Dussar alias Babu (36),Sitaram Patil (48) and Mangesh Mandavkar (30). They were arrested by Unit 12 of the Crime Branch from Kandivili at 10.30 am on Monday and were handed over to the Mandalgarh police.

According to the police,in February 2008,the body of an unidentified man was found in the jurisdiction of the Mandalgarh police station. It was sent for a post mortem and the cause of death was found to be injuries by a hard blunt object.

“A constable from Unit 12 of the Crime Branch received information about the murder of a man by his own brother, and we started working on it. During the course of investigation,it was found that the identity of the deceased was Dilip Wakhariya (38),a resident of Bagesara village in Wadia district of Gujarat. He was unemployed and prone to drinking. He also had a deep interest in trucks and would go out for months at a time with truck drivers, only to return and beat up his mother,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.

“Dilip’s brother Kirit, who owns a snack shop in Lalbaugh, was fed up with the nuisance that he was creating at home. He approached his brother-in-law Bhuptani,a perfume salesman residing in Kandivili (West) for help in eliminating his brother. Bhuptani sought assistance from Ghadi, who owns a paan stall in the area. Ghadi,in turn, recruited Dussar who works at a gym. Patil and tourist taxi driver Mandavkar were roped in by Dussar. While Rs 1 lakh was initially demanded from Kirit, the other accused eventually settled for Rs 80,000 at a meeting held in Garuda Hotel in Kandivili,” said Maria.

According to the police, knowing his love for trucks,Kirit called Dilip and asked him to come to Kandivili on the pretext that he had decided to buy a second hand truck for his brother. Madavkar picked up the two brothers in a Toyata Qualis from Kandivili, and the other accused were also in the car.

At Navi Mumbai, they bought alcohol and drank on the way. At some point, the accused assaulted Dilip with a wooden stick in the car. Patil held his feet while another accused grabbed his head, following which he was strangled in the car. He was eventually thrown down a slope from the car,and a bag of clothes he was carrying burnt at a different spot.
