2 labourers killed after soil caves in at construction site in Byculla

Two labourers were killed while three others were injured after soil caved in at a construction site in Byculla on Saturday afternoon. 

Senior officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said a stop work notice has been issued to the developer, identified as Ibrahim Jusub Supariwala., for undertaking excavation work without any safety measures. 

The incident was reported at Habib mansion situated along Tank Pakadi road at Byculla west at 2.41pm on Saturday. According to the information furnished by the BMC, the mishap occurred during the course of foundation and piling work at a building. As the construction work was unfolding, a portion of soil and mud caved in and fell upon the labourers. 

At least five people were injured in the incident, who were taken to the civic run Nair hospital by the labourers present at the site. Of them, two were declared ‘brought dead’ while three were injured. 

The deceased have been identified as Rahul (30) and Raju (28). The injured have been identified as Sajjad Ali (25), Sobat Ali (28) and Lal Mohammad (18). Officials said the condition of the three injured is now stable.

Speaking to The Indian Express, senior officials from BMC’s E-ward said the civic building proposal department had issued permissions to the developer. However, following the fatal incident on Saturday afternoon, the BMC said the excavation work had been carried out without adequate safety. 

In its stop work notice issued to the developer, the BMC’s E ward stated, “Unauthorised deep excavation and back filling work without any safety precautions and measure which causes danger to the human life during redevelopment of property which is situated at CS number 1836 of Byculla division E ward.” The ward office has also directed the Agripada police station to remove all workers from site to prevent any further development works.

A senior official told The Indian Express, “As per the initial details, the incident occurred as the soil collapsed. However, officials from the BMC’s building proposal will be visiting the site to conduct an inquiry into the matter. Furthermore, the police is also investigating the case to ascertain further details and the exact cause of the collapse.” A police officer said that they will be registering an offence in the matter.
