The Mumbai police arrested two men for allegedly firing at an angadia and escaping with gold jewellery worth Rs 47.27 lakh on Monday night. Police are on the lookout for two others who were a part of the robbery but are at large.

According to police, Chirag Dhandukia (30) and his family run a jewellery business that also deals in transporting gold ornaments to different states.

A police officer said, “They had to transport some gold ornaments to Goa, for which Dhandukia and his two relatives were going to CST railway station. They were travelling in two bikes and the gold ornaments, which were packed in two hand bags, were being carried by the complainant’s 16-year-old nephew, who was riding pillion of a bike.”

Around 10.30pm on Monday, after they reached near CST on the northbound stretch of P. D’Mello road, four unknown persons accosted their way and started snatching the bag from the minor boy. As he resisted, one of the accused removed a firearm and fired two rounds on his leg, after which he let go of one of the two bags, which comprised jewellery worth Rs 47.27 lakhs, and the robbers escaped.

“We formed teams to trace the culprits and after scrutinising the CCTV footage, we identified two assailants and caught them from south Mumbai,” said an officer.

The arrested duo have been identified as Kiran Dhanawade (47), a resident of Girgaon, and Arun Noor Mohamed Madiya (45), a resident of Dongri.

“We have recovered gold valuables worth Rs 16.5 lakhs from them and the process is on to find the remaining stolen ornaments,” said an officer.

“We suspect that someone had tipped them off about the movement, due to which the robbers followed them and laid a trap accordingly. We are trying to ascertain whether more people are involved,” added the police officer
