10k crore approved to compensate farmers in June 2022-Sept 2023, Maharashtra cabinet told

The Maharashtra government has approved over Rs 10,000 crore in the form of compensation to farmers affected by natural calamities between June 2022 to September 2023. Proposals worth Rs 1,400 crore are still pending for approval, according to a presentation made in front of the state cabinet on Wednesday.

While proposals for compensation worth Rs 8,612.96 crore were approved by the state government for the period between June 2022 and October 2022, the state government further approved Rs 1,533 .89 crore for the period between March 2023 and September 2023.

The presentation further showed that while proposals for aid amounting to Rs 1,368.83 crore are pending for the period June to October 2022, proposals worth Rs 168 crore are also pending for the period March to September 2023.

The Maharashtra cabinet on Wednesday was given a detailed presentation with respect to the present condition of agriculture in the state and damage caused by unseasonal rains and hailstorms that happened as recently as last week.

After the cabinet meeting Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that all guardian ministers have been directed to immediately undertake panchnamas of the damage caused to crops and the state government will ensure that every farmer is given required help.

The resultant damage of drought in 2023 to Kharif crops has led to insurance companies accepting claims to the amount of Rs 2,066 crore under Prime Minister Crop insurance Scheme. Out of this amount Rs 1,217 crore have been distributed while rest is yet to be paid.

Meanwhile, the state is also lagging behind in terms of Rabbi sowing this year when compared to that of last year.

This year by November 24, sowing has taken place on 25.10 lakh hectares while last year on the same day, the sowing had taken place on 30.64 lakh hectares.
