Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari, on Friday, asked the Punjab government to go beyond the ritualistic sammelans for NRIs as their problems remained as unresolved as they were since the ritual began.

In a statement issued on Friday, Tewari said the real problems of NRIs still persisted as they face a lot of harassment. He said he has been receiving complaints from NRIs and their relatives in Punjab where they felt victimised due to the callous and hostile, attitude of local authorities.

He said they came with expectations to participate in the sammelans, but the euphoria fizzled out once they were confronted with the same harsh realities they have been facing for years. “Nothing has changed for them”, he said.
