Strike has no effect on liquor vends auction

While most of the city’s businesses remained shut, this auction witnessed a resounding response from the bidders.

The bandh called by various Sikh organisations and supported by the Akal Takht, the highest seat of Sikhism, seems to have had no effect whatsoever on the auction of liquor vends that went on smoothly at Harsheela Resorts on Wednesday.

While most of the city’s businesses remained shut, this auction witnessed a resounding response from the bidders.

In the end,Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA Deep Malhotra and his son Gaurav picked up the largest chunk in the city. Gaurav Malhotra & Co managed to bag nine out of the 25 circles.

More interesting was the fact that while young Sikh youths brandishing lathis and swords,triple-riding on motorcycles and raising ‘Khalistan Zindabad’ slogans could be seen all over the city just to ensure that no shop was open and that the bandh was complete, they did not try even once to stop this auction that went on throughout the day.

Meanwhile, the auction for the year 2012-2013 was held under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner (Excise & Taxation) Gurtej Singh. The auction involved Ludhiana 1,2 and 3 zones which includes some 347 liquor vends that fall within the Municipal Corporation (MC) limit and 162 vends that fall in rural areas.

The administration received 12,022 applications against 7,166 last year. The administration earned Rs 17.7 crore more revenue than last year.

The revenue netted from applications alone was Rs 48.38 crore.
