Pollution officials meet dyers

To take stock of work on common effluent treatment plants (CETP),officials of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) today had a meeting with the dyeing associations and also inspected the work of CETP of electroplating units. Confirming the details of the meeting,Superintending Engineer (SE) Karunesh Garg said,“The dyeing associations were allotted 32 acres of land on Tajpur road about eight months ago but they are waiting for the environmental clearance for the project.”

In addition to this, another common effluent treatment plant for the dyeing association has to come up on 15 acres of land on Bahadurke road but till date they have not got environmental clearance from the centre. The work on the project will begin once the clearance is through.

Interestingly, the dyeing associations of Tajpur Road and Bahadurke Road were seeking bank guaranteed from the Government for the go-ahead of the project or even permission to mortgage the land for seeking loans.

However, the government has stepped down on both demands and has stated that they have allotted the land and now it is the association to decide how to seek funds. The project at Tajpur Road is worth Rs 400 crore.

The government has, however, assured that they will be helping the associations in getting subsidies from the state as well as Central government at various levels.

The project at Tajpur road will be of 117 million litres per day (MLD) for treating the effluent of dyeing units while at Bahadurke it will be of 15 MLD. It will be a zero liquid discharge project.

As of now, although the dyeing units are claiming that they treat the effluent at their personal effluent treatment plants (ETPs) set up in different dyeing units, the state government has often found many dyeing units flouting the norms.

Power connection of many units had also been snapped a number of times. The Punjab Pollution Control Board is firm now for the common effluent treatment plants and, hence,a review meeting was held.
