A team of the Municipal Corporation and police officials were made to turn back without carrying out demolition of 30 shops in Gur Mandi,on Wednesday. MC officials alleged they postponed the drive after ‘facing extreme resistance from residents and temple trustees’. However, some sources said that ‘political pressure was the reason which stopped the drive’.
MC commissioner R K Verma and police commissioner Ishwar Singh took the decision to call back their officials, while deputy commissioner Rahul Tewari told MC to postpone the drive.
A highly placed source from MC (Zone A) told Ludhiana Newsline: The old businessmen in Gur Mandi have strong political connections and we had to cancel drive because of political pressure. Punjab Vidhan Sabha session was going on and we feared the issue might reach there.
Meanwhile,Isha Kalia, head of the building branch of the MC,said: The temple trustees and residents showed too much resistance and we decided to postpone the drive so that their sentiments are not hurt. The drive will be continued with help of district administration and police officials.
Asked about connection between the shops and temple, she said,It was the temple which cut these shops from its land many years ago and they are somewhat connected to those shops.
The temple was not in the demolition list of the MC.
Assistant town planner Kamaljeet Kaur, said: The drive will be continued.
