In a statement issued on Tuesday, Avtar Singh, President of Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (CICU), and Upkar Singh Ahuja, general secretary CICU said the state has abruptly hiked Vehicle Tax from Rs 60,000 to Rs 3 lakh per annum with effect from October 1, 2014 without informing the stake-holders.

The state is emphasising on skill development of the rural unemployed youths, however, it is also adding financial burden on the industry which will further affect the industrial sector.

In the absence of any proper mode of state transport from rural areas to industrial estates, the factory owners have inducted their own modes of transport for providing pick-up and drop facilities to workers.

This facility also ensures safety to women workers/employees, which is of paramount importance nowadays.

It is pertinent to mention that a large number of factories are providing free transport facility to employees by hiring vehicles.

CICU urged Sukhbir Singh Badal, deputy Chief Minister, Punjab to immediately roll back the hike to save the industry.
