Sub-inspector constable ‘beaten up by lawyers’ on court premises in Varanasi, hospitalised

Police said assault took place after a lawyer was booked by police in a land dispute case

A police sub-inspector and constable were allegedly assaulted by a group of lawyers on a court premises in Varanasi on Tuesday, after a lawyer and his rivals were booked for breach-of-peace in a land dispute case, police said.

According to police, the injured police personnel were admitted to a hospital, where doctors said their condition was stable.

Varanasi Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal visited the hospital to meet them, officials said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Nitin Taneja said CCTV footage from the area is being examined to identify the assailants.

Police said that when the two injured cops reached the court on Tuesday, a group of lawyers allegedly surrounded them and began asking for thier names and details of thier posting. Soon after, the lawyers started assaulting the police officers.

According to police, the lawyers also allegedly detained the policemen.

On being informed, a police team rushed to the spot and rescued the two, officials said.
