A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad has lodged a police complaint against her husband and her in-laws, alleging that he gave her a triple talaq verbally on Thursday after she praised the role of the police in containing the violence that broke out in the state’s Sambhal district after a court-ordered survey into a local mosque. Four people were killed and several people were injured in the violence.

Satpal Antil, Moradabad Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), confirmed the incident and said that the 36-year-old woman’s complaint has been forwarded to the jurisdictional women’s police station.

“A woman from Kathghar locality has given a complaint letter against her husband and her in-laws. She has mentioned that she was given the triple talaq after she watched the video of the violence in Sambhal and praised the police. She has also raised many other charges,” SSP Antil said.

“The letter from the SSP’s office has not come to our police station yet. Action will be taken in this connection as triple talaq is a cognisable offence since 2019,” a woman police officer at the Mahila Thana in Moradabad said.

In her complaint, the woman said she was given triple talaq after her husband warned her not to see the videos of the Sambhal violence. “I told him that the role of the police that day was commendable in putting a check on large-scale violence,” she claimed in the complaint.

The woman told the senior police officer that she was married to a man in Kathghar in 2012 and got divorced in 2021. They had three children, she said. Later, she said, she met a man who had a job in Gurugram district and they had physical relations in October 2021 after he allegedly promised to marry her. When he allegedly backtracked, the woman said she threatened to go to the police, following which he married her.

“A few days later, he and my in-laws started physically and mentally harassing me over dowry. On October 31, he forced me to leave his house along with my children,” she said in her complaint.

She claimed that she went to Gurugram on Thursday to resolve the issue with her husband. While waiting for him at his office, she said she watched a video on the Sambhal violence. “When my husband came there and saw me watching the video, he told me not to watch it. I told him that I liked the role of the Sambhal police. He became furious and pronounced triple talaq,” the woman alleged.
