A 20-year-old pregnant woman was found dead inside an abandoned Ambassador car near the Jhansi-Kanpur Highway in the Et area of Jalaun district on Tuesday.
The number-plate of the car bore the inscription Bharat Sarkar (Government of India) on it.
The woman,believed to be from a lower caste,was four-month pregnant,according to the postmortem report.
Jalaun SP Prem Kumar Gautam said the owner of the car has been identified as one Shamim of Kanpur who works as a driver for a Kanpur-based engineer of CPWD.
The name of the engineer is yet to be confirmed,as Shamim is absconding,said police.
Gautam said the car (UP 32 BA-4527) was found stuck in the mud near the highway and the body was lying in its rear seat. The body bore many abrasions around the neck.
After the police verified the cars number,it was found that it belonged to one Subhash Singh of Indira Nagar Colony in Lucknow.
When the police questioned Singh,he told them that he had sold the car few months ago to a Kanpur resident named Shamim who is currently employed as private driver of a PWD engineer.
Singh,too,works as a private driver of RTO in Gorakhpur,the SP said.
The police are searching for Shamim,as Singh failed to give the exact address of the suspects native place.
Gautam said that circumstantial evidence indicated that the suspects were carrying the body to dispose it of when the car got stuck in mud.
