A murder accused sustained a bullet injury to his right leg Saturday morning while attempting to escape the police in Amethi.

The accused, Chandan Verma, 28, was arrested Friday for his alleged involvement in the murder of a teacher Sunil Kumar, 37, his wife Poonam Bharti, 32, and their two daughters, aged five and two, whose bodies were found with bullet injuries inside their house in Amethi on Thursday night.

The police Saturday took Verma to the Mohanganj area of Amethi to recover the weapon and the motorcycle used in the crime, when the accused tried to flee.

Harendra Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police, Amethi, said, “When we took the accused to the location for the recovery of the weapon, he snatched Sub-Inspector Madan Kumar’s service pistol and opened fire on the police team. In retaliation, the police fired back, injuring Chandan Verma, who was then rushed to the hospital.” Verma’s condition is currently stable.

Verma has allegedly confessed to having been in a relationship with the teacher’s wife for one and a half years.

A resident of Rae Bareli, Verma reportedly targeted the family after a dispute with Sunil Kumar. This led to Poonam Bharti filing a complaint against him on August 18, accusing him of “indecent behaviour” and stating that if anything happened to her family, Verma should be held responsible.
