THE UTTAR Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) arrested a wanted member of the banned militant outfit Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC) in Sonbhadra district, officers said on Wednesday. Police identified the accused as Umesh Singh, alias Nageena alias ‘Doctor’, a sub-zonal commander of the group, who was carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh on information leading to his arrest.

Police said they got a tip-off that after an encounter between security forces and TSPC members in Jharkhand’s Palamu district, some militants might slip into Uttar Pradesh to hide. The ATS also learnt that members of the outfit were planning to take shelter in Sonbhadra district.

The police said that around 5 am on Monday, they arrested Umesh Singh, a resident of Jharkhand, in Sonbhadra. The police claimed to have recovered weapons, cartridges, mobile phone, SIM cards and also Rs 99,500 in cash.

In a statement, the police said that the accused was produced before the court and sent to police custody for eight days.
