Taking cognisance of a Class 11 student drowning in a swimming pool at Captain Manoj Pandey UP Sainik School in Gomti Nagar, Lucknow Divisional Commissioner (DC) Roshan Jacob on Monday sought an explanation from the school administration within a week, stating that prima facie, it appeared to be a case of negligence.

Jacob, in a letter to school principal Col Rajesh Raghav, said that prima facie it appeared that student did not know how to swim.

The DC also directed the school administration to inform them about actions taken by it on suggestions she and Additional Chief Secretary (Secondary Education) Deepak Kumar made during a school inspection.

Jacob said a list should have been prepared of the students who do not know how to swim and attention should have been given to them. It pointed out that that the school got to know of the incident 4-5 hours later shows that teachers in-charge were not cautious and did not count the students before leaving the pool and neither was there any coach or lifeguard at that time.

On Friday evening, 16-year-old Om Budhouliya was found dead in the swimming pool.
