Kanpur Police on Friday arrested an inspector-rank officer for his alleged involvement in a land-grabbing case registered at the Gwaltoli police station last month.
According to police, the accused inspector, Sabhajeet Mishra, was booked for allegedly extending support to jailed advocate Akhilesh Dubey, who had been accused of encroaching on Waqf property and raising construction on it.
Mishra was named in the FIR, along with six others — including Dubey — based on a complaint lodged by one Moinuddin Asif at Gwaltoli police station on August 13.
Confirming the arrest of Inspector Mishra, Additional Commissioner of Police (Kanpur) Vinod Kumar Singh said that apart from Mishra, two other inspectors and two sub-inspectors have been suspended for gross negligence of duty.
Last month, the Kanpur Nagar Police Commissioner suspended six police personnel on charges of gross negligence and misconduct, which, officials said, had tarnished the image of the force.
The action came after they were accused of colluding with Dubey and his associates while posted at different police stations across the city.
The officers were also found to have allegedly extended undue benefits to the Dubey group, concealed crucial facts during investigations, and withheld information from their senior officers.
In several cases, they were accused of allegedly facilitating bail proceedings without mandatory approvals and misusing their positions to favour the accused — actions that, officials said, raised serious concerns of indiscipline and possible links with the land mafia in Kanpur.
