AN FIR has been registered in Lucknow against a journalist, Vikas Srivastava, employed with the digital wing of a well-known Hindi media group, after IAS officer B L Meena filed a complaint accusing him of circulating “misleading” information intended to “tarnish” the officer’s reputation.
Meena is Additional Chief Secretary to the Uttar Pradesh government for Horticulture & Sericulture and the Food Processing Department.
The complaint, filed on Sunday, alleges that the journalist put online “false details” and names of persons purportedly employed in Meena’s department.
According to the police, the FIR has been registered at the cyber police station in Lucknow on several charges, including defamation, criminal intimidation and offences under the Information Technology Act. “The complainant has accused the journalist of blackmail and attempting to tarnish his image. The matter is under investigation,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Lucknow) Kamlesh Kumar Dixit.
Police said the complainant enclosed the findings of an “internal inquiry” with his complaint and has sought action to block circulation of the “false” material.
The complainant sought action in the light of the inquiry report on the misleading information being circulated. He also requested that the “false” information be blocked from circulating further.
