BAHUJAN Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Saturday revoked expulsion of former Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Siddharth and reinducted him into the party after he publicly apologised for his “mistakes”.

Siddharth, the father-in-law of Mayawati’s nephew and BSP’s national convener Akash Anand, was expelled from the party in February this year on charges of anti-party activities. He was also blamed for “spoiling the political career” of Akash Anand, who is married to his daughter Pragya.

Siddharth on Saturday posted an apology on social media. “…I apologise to respected Behanji with folded hands for whatever mistakes I have made, knowingly or unknowingly, and by coming under the influence of wrong people while working for the party… I request respected Behanji with folded hands to forgive me, I will never make a mistake in future and will work only under the discipline of the party, under her guidance and direction,” the former MP posted in Hindi.

Siddharth also assured that he will not take any undue advantage of “rishtedari (family relations)”, and requested Mayawati to reinstate him in the party.

A couple of hours later, Mayawati responded to his request in a post on X. “…Although he had realised his mistake much earlier and had been continuously expressing remorse at various levels, today he has publicly expressed his regret. Keeping this in mind, in the interest of the party and the movement, it has been found appropriate to give him another chance… Therefore, the decision of his expulsion from the BSP is revoked with immediate effect, meaning he has been reinducted into the party.”

Mayawati had expelled her nephew from the post of BSP national coordinator in March this year, saying his association with Siddharth by virtue of being his son-in-law has led to the action. The next day, she expelled Akash from the party, and said that he was constantly being influenced by his father-in-law.

Being related to the BSP chief, Siddharth was considered a prominent person in the party organisation, but fell out of favour in February after some leaders complained that he was promoting factionalism.

In April, Akash too apologised on social media and Mayawati forgave him, giving him another chance to work in the party. At that time, she had said that there would be no reprieve for Akash’s father-in-law.

“The mistakes of Akash’s father-in-law Ashok Siddharth are unforgivable. He has left no stone unturned in ruining Akash’s career along with his gross anti-party activities like factionalism etc. Therefore, the question of forgiving him and taking him back into the party does not arise,” she had said.

Last week, Mayawati appointed Akash Anand as the BSP national convener.
