The Varanasi district court is expected to pass an order Friday on a petition seeking opening of the sealed envelopes containing the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) report based on a scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex.

The ASI had undertaken the survey on Varanasi court orders which had ordered it to ascertain whether the mosque was “constructed over a pre-existing structure of a Hindu temple”.

Meanwhile, the ASI, which filed the report on December 18, on Wednesday submitted an application, urging the court to postpone for four weeks the disclosure of its findings.

Earlier, the 4 women petitioners in the lead petition in the district court had filed an application seeking opening the ASI report in the courtroom and to provide the parties with a copy of the report.

The court had on July 21 last year ordered a scientific survey of the complex to ascertain whether the mosque was “constructed over a pre-existing structure of a Hindu temple”.
