Bareilly police have formed a three-member committee to probe allegations against the Anti-Corruption Organisation (ACO) officials in the district for allegedly “framing” a sub-inspector in a false case of corruption.
Sub-Inspector Deep Chand was arrested on January 6 this year for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 from an accused in an assault case. He is currently lodged in the Agra jail.
The probe panel was formed by Bareilly Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anurag Arya after receiving a complaint from Chand’s family, who claimed that members of the local ACO team “falsely implicated” him in the bribery case. Chand’s family complained that he was arrested from the police outpost in the presence of several people, questioning how the bribery could take place under such circumstances.
An official of ACO, however, said that action against Deep Chand was taken based on a complaint and supported by CCTV footage. “He (Chand) was caught red-handed accepting a bribe to help the accused in an assault case by not arresting him,” the ACO official said, adding a chargesheet against Chand under the Prevention of Corruption Act was filed in the court earlier this month.
Meanwhile, the three-member panel, comprising Assistant Superintendent of Police
Anshika Verma, Additional Superintendent of Police Mukesh Chandra Mishra, and Circle Officer Pankaj Kumar Srivastava, has started its probe into the matter.
“We have recorded statements of four persons so far, and the inquiry is ongoing,” said ASP Verma.
Senior officials posted at the ACO and Bareilly SSP Anurag Arya did not respond to the calls made to them.
