8 Uttar Pradesh natives killed as their car rams into truck parked on Varanasi highway; 3-year-old critical

Police said the tragedy struck the two families in the car who were returning from Varanasi after depositing holy ashes of the two deceased members of their families.

Eight people were killed in an accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi early on Wednesday when their SUV rammed into a stationary truck, said the police.

According to the police, the tragedy occurred around 4.30 am when the car with nine passengers from Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district was moving along the Varanasi-Jaunpur highway.

A three-year-old boy, Shanti Swarup, sustained critical injuries and is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Varanasi, they said.

The eight people who died belonged to two families who had travelled to Varanasi to deposit the holy ashes of the two deceased members of their families, the police said.

Varanasi ADCP (Gomati) Saravanan T told The Indian Express that the SUV was moving in front of a truck that nudged the car from behind pushing it into a truck parked on the highway. “The local police rushed to the spot as soon as they got information about the accident at 4.45 am. More details will come out about the causes during further investigation,” the officer added.

The police have identified the deceased as Vipin, 28, his mother Ganga, 51; Mahendra Pal, 35, his wife Chandrakali, 32, his brother Damodar Pal, 32, Damodar’s wife Nirmala Devi, 28, Rajendra and Aman Kashyap. Shanti Swarup, the son of Damodar and Nirmala Devi, is the lone person to have survived in the accident.

“All the deceased belong to two villages under Pooranpur police station limits in Pilibhit. Their families have been informed,” said a police officer.
