Over 120 lawyers met Surat Police Commissioner Shivanand Jha on Monday alleging that officers at Women Police Stations misbehave and harass female complainants.
The group of lawyers, about 50 of them females, said there is a spurt in cases of domestic violence in Surat and female complainants are unable to get justice.
The lawyers said this is because women police officers collude with the men against whom women come to complain against, sometimes taking bribes from them and then convincing the women to opt for voluntary divorce instead of going through lengthy processes of litigation.
These officers even make the female complainants pay for transportation costs in bringing in-laws,who are often the accused in their complaints, they alleged.
The lawyers further alleged that if both the parties meet at the police station, women officers take the side of the men and,in majority of the cases, use filthy language and misbehave with the complainants.
These officers are also said to have strictly instructed the complainants not to bring lawyers into the police station, they said.
Kirtan Salve,a female advocate, said,We have put the personal experience of complainants and lawyers in the memorandum and everything is true. The women officers put pressure on complainants to go for a divorce. The duty of police is to understand the case first and try to solve it and get the family reunited. We have demanded that the Police Commissioner personally intervene in the issue. We have also sent copy of memorandum to the DGP and state home ministry through fax.
