The West Bengal Human Rights Commission will record the statements of the gangrape victim’s brother as well as of villagers Mousumi Kayal and Tumpa Tayal on July 29. Mousumi and Tumpa were termed Maoists by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during her visit to Kamduni last month.

The commission’s decision came after a meeting between retired chief justice A K Ganguly, who is heading the panel of inquiry of the commission, and Malini Bhattacharya, former chairperson of the commission. Bhattacharya, who had visited Kamduni and met the victim’s family, told justice Ganguly that the students and women of Kamduni were living under acute threat and without any security. The witnesses, including the brother of the victim, also need protection, she added. The commission then directed the victim’s brother,Tumpa and Mousumi to appear before the full bench of the commission on July 29.
