‘Want to be part of the change, hope there will be happy days for Bengal’

The Trinamool had come with a lot of promises but it is losing the trust of the people.

Interview with Rupa Ganguly

Actor Rupa Ganguly, who formally joined the BJP on Wednesday at a function by the party’s traders’ cell in Howrah, speaks to Arshad Ali about her plans

You joined the party after negotiations for about a year…

I had been in talks with the party for about a year now. I took the time to join because I needed time to think and convince myself. I didn’t want it to be a half-hearted decision. I had been in touch with BJP leader Shamik Bhattacharya. I have worked for my NGO in various districts and found that people were unhappy and a change is required. I want to be a part of the change. Hopefully, there will be happy days for Bengal too. Even if BJP was not in power a year ago, it had promise and it could be understood that the party will come to power.

Aren’t you happy with the last change?

The Trinamool had come with a lot of promises but it is losing the trust of the people. I don’t want to blame the government for everything. It is not that they have not done anything but of course, they fell short of the expectations. Nevertheless, if I see injustice, I will definitely raise my voice.

The Bengali film industry is hugely polarised and dominated by the ruling government…

Yes, it is true. People who dare to belong to other camps are often ill-treated and they don’t get work. Me joining the BJP perhaps will make it even further polarised.

Do you think you will be able to fix that?

It is too early to say so but I will definitely try my best to do whatever I can.

Have you been promised any post in the party?

I have a lot of experience in acting but in politics, I am only one day old in the party and politics. I have joined as a state level worker. I have neither made any commitment nor did I ask for any but if I succeed in doing a little for people, I will feel satisfied.

You were disappointed with the last change. What if BJP too, if and after they come to power, fail to meet your expectations?

I am an honest person who likes to call a spade a spade. So, you can imagine what I am going to do in that case.
