Upadhyay to be new state election commissioner

An amendment to include WBCS officers as eligible for posts of SECs was carried out in 2010.

S K Upadhyay, special secretary in the Raj Bhavan, will replace Meera Pandey to become the next State Election Commissioner of West Bengal. Pandey is due to retire on July 21. While the post of SECs before has seen IAS officers getting appointed, Upadhyay is a state civil services officer. An amendment to include WBCS officers as eligible for posts of SECs was carried out in 2010.

Incidentally, Pandey, as Bengal’s election commissioner, gave harrowing times to the state government by filing cases against it before the panchayat polls and then again for holding elections in 11 state municipalities.

While the case pertaining to the panchayat polls arrived at the doors of Supreme Court, whose verdict came in favour of the commission, the case on the civic body elections is still on at the Calcutta High Court.

When contacted Pandey told The Indian Express: “It was the Commission which had filed the case. It was not a personal case. So it is now up to them to take a call on that.”
