Police made a third arrest late Tuesday in connection with the alleged assault and rape threats made to a junior female doctor at West Bengal’s Uluberia Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay Government Medical College and Hospital on Monday evening.
According to police, Sheikh Samrat (24) was arrested from his residence in Howrah’s Uluberia after investigators allegedly identified him from CCTV footage. Earlier, the police had arrested Sheikh Babulal, a home guard attached to Uluberia Traffic Police, and Sheikh Hasibur in connection with the case.
The incident occurred on Monday evening when a pregnant woman from Lohanagar in Kharia, Mynapur, was being treated at the hospital. As the junior doctor examined her, the woman’s family members allegedly became agitated after being informed that a senior doctor would attend to the patient after visiting hours ended at 6 pm.
In her complaint, the female doctor alleged, “The relatives of the pregnant woman did not listen to me. Instead, they started threatening me. The accused punched me on my shoulder, twisted my arm, verbally abused me and threatened that if I go out on the road, they would rape me.”
The doctor also claimed that the home guard introduced himself as a police officer and threatened her with dire consequences. She said there were no security personnel present at the time and that she was rescued by nurses in the ward.
Following her written complaint, police registered a case. A senior officer said the CCTV footage is being reviewed and further investigation is underway.
Trinamool Congress MLA Dr Nirmal Majhi, who visited the hospital and met the administration, said, “We don’t want to go into politics. There was not enough security in the hospital at that time. We have asked for drills to check attendance and preparedness. There will be zero tolerance for such incidents. We have directed that both male and female security guards patrol inside wards, all wearing proper ID cards.”
Subir Majumdar, MSVP in charge, said, “This is a new medical college, only three years old. An inquiry committee is being formed. The junior doctor is traumatised, and once she is ready, the committee will begin its work. Many guards have already been appointed under the Ratri Sathi scheme, but more have been requested.”
State Health Secretary Narayan Swaroop Nigam said the department is monitoring the case closely and has sought a report from the hospital. “The police have acted swiftly,” he added.
Meanwhile, the incident has again raised concerns over the safety of women in government hospitals. The Service Doctors’ Forum and Joint Platform of Doctors have submitted deputations to the hospital, demanding stronger safety measures for female doctors on duty.
The incident comes over a year after a woman doctor on duty at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was raped and murdered. Civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy was later convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by a Sealdah court.
