Leader of Opposition in state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Friday filed a police complaint while alleging an attack by an “ultra-Left organisation” near Jadavpur University (JU) campus where he had gone to attend a protest meeting organised by Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. The protest meet was organised over the death of a 17-year-old undergraduate student who died after allegedly falling from his second-floor hostel balcony on the JU campus.

According to Adhikari, the alleged incident occurred while he was exiting the venue on Thursday evening.
“Yesterday, I visited Jadavpur to attend an event organised by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). While exiting the venue, around 5.40 pm, I was suddenly attacked by a group of unknown assailants, who managed to breach security and were shouting slogans and brandishing black flags,” Adhikari said in a tweet on Friday. He also attached an image of the complaint received by Jadavpur police station with his tweet.

He further wrote, “The unknown miscreants belonged to the “Revolutionary Students Federation”; an Ultra-Left frontal organisation of the banned Maoist outfit. The attack appeared to be a response of the members of the said Organisation, who didn’t like the fact that I minced no words in my speech and called out their hypocrisy. These people are part of a group who have made Jadavpur University a den of anti-national & anti-social activities. They harbour anti -establishment and secessionist ideologies; who are always criticising the govt, but at the same time clinging on to the institution, even after their formal association is over, to keep on enjoying the subsidised benefits meant for the students.”

“Though I do not know their names but I will be able to identify them if they are brought before me,” he said, while attaching a video clip where the protestors were talking to the media after the incident.

Owning up their role to show the black flag to Adhikari, one of the protestors told reporters “We are revolutionary students front, we are a Naxalite student organisation, we are a self-styled Maoist student organisation.”

Activists of RSF and BJYM allegedly clashed on Thursday before near gate number four of Jadavpur University which had been witnessing a series of protests since August 10 following the death of the undergraduate student.
Meanwhile, Left students’ organisations took out a rally at the JU campus on Friday to seek justice for the death of the student and demand the immediate arrest of those behind the incident. The protesters also blocked the road outside the Jadavpur Police Station. A civil march was also organised in Jadavpur area.

At the same time, the police dismantled the stage set up by the BJYM outside the JU campus, from where Adhikari had given an address on Thursday, near 8B bus stand. According to reports, as the police were removing the state, BJYM members again tried to protest. Sources said that 10-12 people were picked up from the spot. Later, a group of BJYM workers staged a sit-in near the gate of the university.

BJP youth leader Indranil Khan said, “Police cannot arrest the culprits who killed an innocent student. They can only vandalise our peaceful protest and safeguard TMC goons.”

BJP’s south Kolkata district president Sanghamitra Choudhury told PTI, the podium had come up with necessary permission from police and was scheduled to be in place till August 18 and the police suddenly swung into action to dismantle it in an “undemocratic” manner.

“We don’t want to create a law and order problem. But our protest was against ragging and the death of the young student which was caused by intense physical and mental torture. No idea if TMC’s police have any issue with it,” she added.
