Sutia apprehensive about film on Barun Biswas

As Raj Chakraborty’s film Proloy — based on the life of Barun Biswas, the anti-rape crusader from Sutia — gets ready to hit the screen on Eid,his family members and villagers are apprehensive about the film.

The film is based on how the 40-year-old was shot dead for raising his voice against rapists. He dared to speak up against a gang which went around spreading terror in the village and at the slightest provocation, would rape a family member. Barun had put up an anti-rape forum which still exists and fights social injustice. “They had come to the village, talked to me and shot extensively here. It would have been better if we were shown the film in advance before it was screened publicly. We were shown the film’s trailer, but if we had seen the film in advance,we could have pointed out our reservations if any,” said Asit Biswas,Barun’s brother.

Parimal Mondal, joint secretary of the forum echoed similar sentiments. “We were told they would be shown the film before it is released but somehow it did not happen. I hope there is nothing objectionable in it. We have been invited to the premiere on August 9 at 7 pm at a city theatre, and if we find there is something offensive or objectionable,we will call a press conference the day after,” he said.

Makers of the film are, however, confident there will be no such issues. “If people wants to put in an objection, they would do so anyway. But the film starring Parambrata Chatterjee and Mimi Chakraborty is a reflection of the ideologies of Barun Biswas. I have done as much research as I could and made it a positive film. I am confident the people of Sutia would find nothing objectionable to it,” said director Raj Chakraborty.

Officials of Venkatesh Films, which is producing the film, said they had invited over 60 villagers from Sutia to watch the film.

“It is definitely not a biopic of Barun. In fact, the film goes beyond the death of Barun. He dies just before interval and then it is a work of pure fiction as to how the fight would have been carried forward and how his assailants are captured,” a senior official of the production house said.
