Mystery behind Quasem death: How did he land 9 metres away from hostel wall?

Justice D P Sengupta, the retired judge of the Calcutta High Court who is probing the death of CPM MLA Mostafa Bin Quasem

Justice D P Sengupta, the retired judge of the Calcutta High Court who is probing the death of CPM MLA Mostafa Bin Quasem,on Wednesday visited the fourth floor of the MLA hostel at Kyd Street from where, according to the police, the legislator jumped to his death.

Kazi Safiullah, the counsel of the Quasem’s family which has alleged foul play into his death, said the commission could not figure out whether the MLA had jumped from the balcony or the window of the fourth floor.

Safiullah, who accompanied Justice Sengupta, pointed out that the MLA’s body was found on the roof of an old canteen located just beneath the balcony of room number 109 of the hostel. But on May 29,2011,the day when Quasem was found dead,he was lodged in room number 411 on the fourth floor of the building.

‘’Either the MLA jumped from the window or the balcony of his room. If Quasem had jumped from the window or balcony of his room,he could not have landed on the spot from where his body was found,” said Safiullah.

According to Safiullah,if Quasem had jumped from either of the two spots, his body must have had landed within a distance of 3-4 metres from the wall of the hostel. However,he added, that the body was found at a distance of 9-10 metres from the hostel wall. “That’s the mystery behind his death,” he added.

Justice Sengupta inspected the place for more than an hour and made certain enquires from Investigating Officer of Kolkata Police Saibal Roy.

Safiullah also tried to convince Justice Sengupta that it was not possible for the MLA to stand on the window or the balcony as he was suffering from acute arthritis and kidney disorder.

I requested Justice Sengupta to summon the member of CPM’s Control Commission, which was inquiring into the corruption of the members,as Quasem was chairperson of the panel. “So the commission should find out whether Quasem was probing any serious corruption case of the party. It is important to mention that the purported suicide note recovered from the room mentioned senior CPM leaders like Gautam Deb,Amitava Nandi,Tarit Topdar and Amitava Basu for pressurising him to contest the polls.

Justice Sengupta refused to make any comment on today’s inspection.
