Kolkata under orange alert for thunderstorms; heavy rain likely in 3 districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind in Kolkata and eight other districts of West Bengal – North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Purulia, West Midnapore, West Burdwan, East Burdwan, and Bankura – on Friday.

The wind is likely to blow at a speed up to 60 kmph, officials said.

The IMD has also predicted heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm in most of parts of East Midnapore, North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas.

The department has also issued a report on the possible impact of thunderstorms such as damage of standing crops, reduction of visibility, damage of loose or unsecured structures and traffic disruption in urban areas.

However, there will not be any significant change in the maximum temperature during the next four days in tge state, weather officials said.

Yellow alerts for rain and thunderstorms in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar are predicted till Sunday.

Meanwhile, on Thursday regions in Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas, Malda, North 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Howrah Kolkata, Hooghly, Purulia, Jhargram, Bankura, West Midnapore, West Burdwan, East Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur witnessed heavy rain.

During the daytime, Kolkata recorded 32 degree Celsius, with the maximum humidity at 98 per cent on Thursday.

In other parts such as Bankura, Sriniketan, Burdwan, Asansol, Barrackpore, Jhargram , Krishnanagar, and Jhargram, the maximum temperature hovered around 32-33 degree Celsius.
