A 22-hour protest at the Presidency University over lack of transparency in the admission process ended on Saturday afternoon. Students gheraoed the university registrar demanding corrective measures, calling off the agitation only after officials assured that they would publish the merit list for the admissions test.
Students had alleged that the results for the admission test had led to confusion, particularly because the list mentions names and marks but no application numbers.
Registrar Debajyoti Konar assured students that the merit list would be published by August 9, reiterating that there were no inconsistencies in the test. Officials of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB), which conducted the university’s admission test, stressed on the same.
The agitation had begun on Friday at 5 pm. The students demanded a meeting with officials to discuss the admission process, merit list, publication and the counselling process. “Two days have been allotted for counselling, which would be very bothersome for the the applicants. But more importantly, there is complete lack of transparency in the admission process,” said a protesting student.
Protesters also demanded a fixed date for counselling prior to admissions.
