A fourth-year Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur student was found hanging in his hostel on Tuesday night in Paschim Medinipur district. While the institute said the student “chose the path of self-harm”, the police said they are investigating the matter.

The deceased was identified as K Kiran Chandra, 21, a resident of Telangana, who was a student in the electrical engineering department.

According to sources, he was found dead by his other hostel inmates, following which he was rushed to the hospital on the IIT-Kharagpur campus where he was declared brought dead.

Police have registered a case of unnatural death and sent Chandra’s body for a post-mortem examination at the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital.

“We are currently investigating the matter. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination,” a senior police officer said.

“With a sense of utter shock, the students, staff and faculty members of IIT-Kharagpur deeply mourn the sudden demise of Mr. K Kiran Chandra, a fourth-year Dual Degree student in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He was a boarder of the Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hall of Residence and chose the path of self-harm on the night of 17th October, 2023,” IIT-Kharagpur said in a release issued on Wednesday.

The institute said that Chandra was with two of his roommates in their hostel room till about 7.30 pm. “Later, the other two students left for academic activities. Hailing from Tinsukia in Assam, Faizan was a third-year mechanical engineering student. Faizan’s family had moved court seeking the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe Faizan’s death. In April 2023, the Calcutta High Court had ordered a second post-mortem examination of his body observing that it is necessary to bring out the truth.

In June this year, the body of another student, Suriya Dipen, was recovered under mysterious circumstances from the institute campus. According to the police, he died by suicide.
