Considered a prize catch,top Maoist leader Arnab Dam alias Vikram alias Surya was arrested by the West Bengal police from Biramdih railway station in Purulia district,bordering Jharkhand,last night.
As secretary of the Bengal Jharkhand Orissa Border Regional Committee,Dam,34,was reportedly given the key responsibility of re-organising the Maoists in the area after Kishenjis death. He has around 79 cases against him,including murder,abduction,looting and sedition.
We arrested Dam at around 11 pm yesterday. We recovered an AK-47 with two magazines filled with ammunition. We also recovered some Maoist literature,letters written to his associates and to the media,a camera and a hard disc, said Gangeswar Singh,IG,western range.
The son of a retired West Bengal district judge,Dam dropped out of IIT-Kharagpur in the third semester of his mechanical engineering course sometime in 1998 to join the Chatra Yuba Sangram Committee,a Maoist outfit active in Burdwan district. In 1999,he left his home on the outskirts of Kolkata to join the CPI(Maoist).
Since then,he has been arrested thrice on sedition charges.
In 2005,Dam is reported to have joined the Lalgarh squad and operated with top Maoist leaders like Sasadhar Mahato,Bikash and Suchitra Mahato. He later shifted to the Purulia-Ayodhyay-Dalma region.
Dam is believed to have been behind the abduction of a CID inspector and a school teacher,who were later found dead in October 2010. He is also wanted for the killing of CPI(M) leader Ajit Singh and his son Bapi in Balrampur last October.
