HC seeks report from govt on land ‘acquired’ two decades ago

A Division Bench of Calcutta High Court headed by Chief Justice Jaynarayan Patel asked the state government to file a report on the land.

A Division Bench of Calcutta High Court headed by Chief Justice Jaynarayan Patel on Friday asked the state government to file a report on the land, which had been acquired in 1989 for National Highway project and railways in Malda district.

Last month,a farmers’ outfit — Lakshipur Sanjukto Krishak Sangram Samity — of Baishnabnagar in Malda had filed a writ petition demanding compensation for the lands acquired from them by the state government nearly two decades ago.

In the petition, the farmers stated that the state government had acquired 300 acres for National Highways Authority on India,Railways and National Thermal Power Corporation. About 4,000 farmers, the petition alleged, were affected by the land acquisition. It also accused the state government of not paying compensation to a majority of the farmers and added that only a handful of farmers received a paltry sum of money.

Kalyan Kumar Chakraborty, the counsel of the petitioners, said the acquired land remains unutilised till date and some portion of it has been encroached.

The state government’s counsel, however, urged the court to dismiss the petition saying the farmers have failed to give the deatils of the acquired land. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for December.
