GJM activist dies,bandh called

Post-poll clashes have disturbed the peace witnessed in the hills during the polls in the region. Today a GJM supporter,Rabin Rai,who was critically injured during a clash between the supporters of GNLF and GJM on May 16,died in a private hospital in Siliguri.

Rabin Rai and five other GJM supporters were critically injured on Monday near Sonada when they were attacked with sharp weapons.

As the news of the death spread,it led to an undeclared strike in Kurseong. Rai belonged to this area. Rohit Sharma, the winning GJM candidate from Kurseong, said,“The bandh is a spontaneous response from the people of hills.” With this, the huge victory rally, originally scheduled for Saturday, has become uncertain.

Roshan Giri,GJM general secretary, said,“After we lost three young partymen during violence in Sibchu in February,we have lost one more young dedicated partyman. We will not tolerate this torture on our people.”

He said the clash took place because of provocative speeches of Subhash Ghising. “Despite our repeated requests to the government,Ghising returned to Darjeeling before the polls with active support from the CPM and the administration,” said Giri.
