For defence,Netai accused falls back on Salwa Judum

One of the accused in the Netai killing has invoked Salwa Judum to defend himself from the charge of setting up of an armed camp in the village.

One of the accused in the Netai killing has invoked Salwa Judum to defend himself from the charge of setting up of an armed camp in the village.

While moving the bail petition in the Calcutta High Court,Abani Singh’s counsel on Wednesday said that his client set up the armed camp as per the policy of the central government to encourage the general people to hold resistance against the Maoists.

Arguing the case for Singh, lawyer Ashish Sanyal said that the camp was set up by the CPM to combat the Maoist menace and referred to Salwa Judum set up by the Chhattisgarh government.

On January 7,nine persons were shot dead and 28 others were injured when armed CPM cadres opened fire on them at Netai in West Midnapore district. The CBI,which was handed over the investigation, filed a chargesheet on April 4,against 20 people, including 12 CPM men. Eight CPM workers are still absconding.

Sanyal today pleaded that CBI chargesheet didn’t mention about his client firing on the villagers. Sanyal who is representing three other accused — Aswani Chawlak,Suvendu Mondal and Nabakumar Shanki — in the case said the chargesheet names the four for having an active role in setting up the armed camp inside the house of Rathin Dandapat. The next hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
