Five more Maoists arrested in state

Five Maoists have been arrested from several places in the state.

Five Maoists have been arrested from several places in the state today. Four of them were picked up from various places in West Midnapore and a Maoist leader was arrested from Goghat in Hooghly.

According to a senior police officer,Dilip Mahato along with Lakhshmikanta Soren and Babulal Tudu were arrested from Lakshmanpur village. “After receiving a tip-off,we raided the forest near Lakshmanpur of Lalgarh and arrested three Maoist cadres,” said Manoj Verma,Superintendent of Police,West Midnapore.

A senior officer further said: “Dilip is an important catch for us. He was involved in the Sankrail operation,in which two officers were killed and OC Atindranath Dutta was abducted. Dilip is also accused of abducting constable Kanchan Garai and ASI Sabir Mollah in Lalgarh.”

The three are residents of Bhulageria village near Lalgarh. Two rifles,two double-barrel guns and a landmine were seized from their possession,Verma added.

Another Maoist squad member,Uttam Mandi,was arrested from Binpur in West Midnapore. A senior officer said Mandi,a resident of Binpur,used to work as a Maoist linkman.

The police have also arrested Maoist leader Ashok Sinha from Goghat in Hooghly,which is believed to be a red citadel in the district.

Maoists open fire at CPM office,1 dead

A CPM district committee member,Sasthi Barui,was shot dead as armed Maoists attacked the CPM party office at Khairashol in Birbhum on Thursday. Humayun Kabir,Superintendent of Police,Birbhum,said that four Maoists,armed with sophisticated rifles,stormed into the party office at 6 pm and opened fire. Barui,who was present at the office received three bullet injuries.
