The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) is inquiring into the role of some senior local leaders in the clash that took place minutes after Mausam Benazir Noor was declared winner in the election for the West Bengal Youth Congress presidents post.
Though Noor, also a Congress MP from Malda North, was announced the winner she had defeated her rival Arindam Bhattacharjee by 161 votes a statement posted by the IYC on its website stated that the results are on hold till an internal probe submits its findings. The result of the West Bengal Youth Congress president election is on hold and liable to change. The final results will be announced once the investigation regarding the state elections is concluded, the statement read.
The trio of IYC representatives Jitendra Singh,Taqui Ahmed,Usha Naidu, considered close to Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi also held a series of meetings with Noor in the aftermath of the results. Sources said Noor also received a call from Rahul Gandhi on Monday night and she was expected to leave for Delhi soon.
Speaking to The Indian Express,IYC general secretary Usha Naidu said,We will announce the disciplinary action, which we will take (against the troublemakers),in a day or two.
Sources in the Congress partys youth outfit said apart from Bhattacharjees role in Mondays pandemonium,MP Deepa Dasmunsi is also under the scanner. Others whose roles are being inquired into are powerful Congress leader from Ranaghat,Shankar Singh, his son Subhankar Singh and Souvik Hussain,a Youth Congress leader from Murshidabad.
Local leaders feel that the public display of factionalism in the state Congress ahead of the crucial Assembly elections has hurt the partys image. The clash has no doubt tarnished our partys image and disciplinary action should be taken, said a former Youth Congress president, who did not wish to be named.
