The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced its candidate for the upcoming Kaliganj bypoll, scheduled for June 19. The party has selected 38-year-old Alifa Ahmed, a B.Tech graduate and employee at a renowned IT company.

TMC shared the announcement on X:
“Under the inspiration and guidance of Chairperson Mamata Banerjee, AITC is pleased to announce the candidate for the upcoming West Bengal Legislative Assembly By-election scheduled for June, 19, 2025.”

According to TMC sources, Alifa Ahmed is the daughter of the late MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, popularly known as ‘Lal’. She is described as a well-educated professional with a strong career background. A senior TMC leader said, “She is widely respected in the area for her eloquence and people-first approach. Her previous experience as a Zilla Parishad member in Kaliganj has given her valuable political experience and made her a familiar and trusted face in the constituency.”

Meanwhhile, to ensure peaceful conduct of the election, the Election Commission of India has announced the deployment of 20 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the Kaliganj Assembly constituency in Nadia district.

This early deployment strategy is aimed at enabling security personnel to familiarise themselves with the terrain, identify sensitive areas, and ensure adequate coverage of polling stations in advance.

The by-election in Kaliganj was necessitated by the untimely death of sitting TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed in February this year. He was 70 at the time of his passing and had a distinguished political career in the region.

Ahmed was first elected in 2011 during the landmark election that ended the 34-year rule of the Left Front in West Bengal and brought the TMC to power under Mamata Banerjee. Although he lost the seat to Congress candidate Hasanuzzaman Sk in 2016, he regained it in the 2021 Assembly elections.
