‘Controversial’ Indian Museum director quits

B Venugopal was questioned by the West Bengal CID on the mysterious disappearance of Sunil Upadhyay.

Director of Indian Museum B Venugopal, whose one-year tenure in the 200-year-old museum was marked with controversies and disappearance of museum conservation officer Sunil Upadhyay, has put in his papers to West Bengal Governor Kesari Nath Tripathi, the chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT).

Ashok Tripathy, spokesperson for the museum, told The Indian Express: “I don’t know whether you can call it resignation or not. But, the fact is since his one-year lien has expired in December he has asked the chairman BOT what he should do… Either he should quit or stay? He wants to know what the government would like to do with him. And the Governor has sent it to the ministry of culture.’’

A few months ago, Venugopal was questioned by the West Bengal CID on the mysterious disappearance on July 3 of Sunil Upadhyay, the conservation officer of the museum and a whistle blower on the several alleged misappropriations in museum activities.

The relatives of Upadhyay have filed a case in the Supreme Court appealing that the Court intervened in the matter.
Venugopal came from the Natural History Museum in Delhi and joined Indian Museum, established in 1814, in October 2013.

Two months ago in the BOT meeting, Venugopal was questioned by members particularly for his role in the damaging of Rampurva Lion Capital during repair and renovation of the museum.
