GLOOM has descended in Tollywood — the Bengali film industry — as the Saradha Group chit fund mess has led to several similar financial companies, which had invested in films,to stop makingfurther payments.

Industry insiders said production and release of at least 20 films have come to a halt. “There are films which are half ready and which are nearly complete. Since funds have suddenly dried up,they have to be either shelved at the moment or the producers do not want these films to be released now anticipating trouble,” said a reputed Tollywood distributor.

Swarup Biswas, president of Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India, said,“Many small- saving companies are directly involved in film production and many indirectly. So this was bound to happen. We have spoken to Eastern India Motion Pictures Association (EIMPA) about it for early resolution.”

Filmmakers, however, see a silver lining in the crisis. They feel that it would help sieve out unwanted investors and people from the industry. “Thanks to the Saradha scam, junk films will be driven out of the industry,” said director Kaushik Ganguly.

President of EIMPA,Surinder Singh, said it has come as a respite for serious filmmakers. “This will help check poor quality movies,” Singh said and added: “It was bound to happen as large sums of money was being pumped in and actors had started demanding astronomical figures.”

Actor-director Arjun Chakraborty termed it as “a harsh eye-opener”. “I am sorry for the technicians and others involved with films which were funded by chit fund companies and have been shelved. But I believe somewhere a cleansing process was required,” he said.
